Why does this system exist?

Invitations are used to control spam, to slow registrations, and to hold people accountable and ensure they are only inviting people they know won't abuse the system. Say, if this project were to get really popular, we wouldn't get thousands of users coming to sign up at once, they would slowly come in at a manageable pace.
